Quran 29:45 "Perform the Salaah (the Prayers). Verily, the Salaah prevents from shameful and evil wicked deeds"
A man came to the Prophet (S) and said, "So-and-so prays at night, but when morning comes, he steals." The Prophet (S) said: "What you are saying (i.e., the Salaah) will stop him from doing that (i.e. from stealing)."
[Reported by Ahmad]
Prayer has 3 attributes, and any prayer that does not contain any of these attributes is not truly prayer:
1) Being done sincerely for Allah alone (Ikhlas),
2) Fear of Allah, and
3) Remembrance of Allah.

"Ikhlas" makes a person do good deeds,
"Fear" prevents him from doing evil deeds,
"The Remembrance of Allah" is the Qur'an which contains the commands and prohibitions.
