Every 40 seconds a person dies by Suicide - Islam has the solution

  • Every 40 seconds a person dies by Suicide
Approximately 1,000,000 suicides take place worldwide each year. Every 40 seconds a person kills himself. (as reported by World Health Organization, 2009) In the United States, which is the leading country of the world, around 100 Americans take their own life every day.

  • Why?

The most common reason for suicide is - Depression and being "fed up" with life and as a result, attempting to end it.

  • What is the solution?

Allah's messenger (S) said "None of you should make a request for death because of the trouble in which he is involved, but if there is no other help to it, then say: 'O Allah, keep me alive as long as there is goodness in life for me and bring death to me when there is goodness in death for me.'"
(Muslim)

  • It's a blessing to have a long life filled with Allah's remembrance, good deeds and tawbah (repentance from sins)

Allah's Messenger (S) said, "Do not wish for death, for the terror of the place whence one looks down is severe. It is part of a man's happiness that his life should be long and Allah Who is Great and Glorious, should supply him with repentance."
(Tirmidhi)

Allah's Messenger said: "None amongst you should make a request for death, and do not call for it before it comes, for when any of you dies, he stops (to do good) deeds and the life of a believer is not prolonged but for goodness."
(Muslim)

  • Problems are a part of everyone's life and they are a means of getting you closer to Allah and a purification from sins

The Prophet (S) said: "No pain, hardship, sickness or grief befalls a believer, not even worry that befalls him, but some of his bad deeds will be expiated."
(Bukhaari)

Prophet (S) said: "Calamities will continue to befall believing men and women in themselves, their children and their wealth, until they meet Allaah with no burden of sin.”
(Silsilat al-Ahaadeeth al-Saheehah)

  • Paradise is forbidden for one who commits suicide!

Allah says "And do not kill yourselves. Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you."
(Qur'an 4:29)

The Prophet (S) said, “A man among those who came before you was wounded. He panicked and took a knife and cut his hand, and the bleeding did not stop until he died. Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, said: ‘My slave hastened his death; I have forbidden Paradise to him.”
(Bukhaari, Muslim)

Prophet (S) said, “Whoever kills himself with something will be punished with it on the Day of Resurrection.”
(Bukhaari)

Prophet (S) said: “Whoever throws himself down from a mountain and kills himself will be throwing himself down in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever. Whoever drinks poison and kills himself will be sipping it in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever. Whoever kills himself with a piece of iron will have that iron in his hand, thrusting it into his belly in the Fire of Hell for ever and ever.”
(Bukhaari)
  •   Remember life is a test and death is not the end of it

Life is a test from Allah, He tests people in various ways and times. He tests some by blessing them with countless bounties to see if the servant appreciates what he has been blessed with by Allah and he shows gratitude towards Allah for blessing him with these bounties. At times Allah in his infinite wisdom, puts a person in intense grief, to see if the servant turns to Allah and seeks guidance and help.

Excellent examples of both situations are found in the life and story of the Prophet of Allah, Ayyub (AS). Allah granted him many bounties, then he gave him such illness that the people around him could not bear. Prophet Ayyub (AS) turned to Allah for help and Allah in his infinite mercy returned all the past bounties upon him. In some narrations it has been said that Allah gave him more bounties than the amount he had before his illness.

In the Quraan Allah has mentioned the call for help of Prophet Ayyub (AS). Allah says:
"And (Remember) Ayyub (Job), when he cried to his Lord: "Verily, distress has seized me, and you are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy". So We answered his call, and removed the distress that was on him, and We restored his family to him (that he had lost) and the like thereof along with them as a mercy from Ourselves and a reminder for all those who worship Us. (Surah Al-Anbiya Verse 83-84)

In another Surah of the Quraan Allah says regarding Prophet Ayyub (AS):
"And remember Our slave Ayyub (Job), when he invoked his Lord (saying):"Verily Satan has touched me with distress (by ruining my health) and torment (by ruining my wealth)! (Allah said to him): "Strike the ground with your foot: This is (a spring of) water to wash in, cool and a (refreshing) drink". And We gave him back his family, and along with them the like thereof, as a Mercy from Us, and a Reminder for those who understand."And take in your hand a bundle of thin grass and strike therewith (your wife), and break not your oath. Truly, We found him patient. How excellent a slave! Verily, he was ever oft- returning in repentance (to Us).

Like Prophet Ayyub, each and every one of us is tested by Allah in someway or another. Some turn to Allah and seek help, as in the case of Prophet Ayyub and others turn completely to the opposite side, which leaves many in grief. These people upon whom many grieve and mourn are the people who have turned to suicide.
